Using your FSA or HSA for eye care

Updated October 2026 · Sources listed below

A flexible spending account (FSA) or health savings account (HSA) lets you pay for many eye care costs with pre-tax dollars. If you have an FSA, the end of the year is a good time to check your balance, because money you don’t use can be lost.

What eye care usually qualifies

  • Eye exams, including contact lens exams and fittings
  • Prescription glasses and prescription sunglasses
  • Contact lenses and contact lens solution
  • Prescription eye drops, and over-the-counter drops such as artificial tears
  • Medical eye visits, such as for dry eye, infections or eye injuries
  • Laser vision correction, such as LASIK

Non-prescription sunglasses and cosmetic items usually don’t qualify. Your plan has the final say, so check with your plan administrator if you’re unsure.

FSA vs. HSA: know your deadline

  • FSA: usually “use it or lose it” by the end of your plan year, often December 31. Some employers allow a short grace period or let you carry over a limited amount, but not both. Check with your HR department or plan.
  • HSA: the money is yours and rolls over every year. There’s no deadline.

Make the most of it

  • Check your balance now. December appointments fill up quickly.
  • Start with a comprehensive eye exam. An updated prescription opens the door to new glasses or contacts.
  • Consider a backup pair of glasses, prescription sunglasses or a year’s supply of contacts.
  • Keep itemized receipts, since your plan may ask for them.
  • Dry eye treatments such as IPL may qualify. Ask your plan, and we’ll give you an itemized receipt.

Using your benefits at Fenix Lumi

We accept FSA and HSA cards at both offices for eye exams and medical eye care.

At our Moreno Valley office, cash prices start at $84.95 for a comprehensive exam, $139.95 for a contact lens exam and fitting, $39 for retinal imaging and $15 for dilation. Call our Chino office at (909) 264-8066 for its fees. Glasses and frames are sold by the optical shop at each location, so ask them about using your card there. See also our insurance plans.
